A spectacular Chinese New Year lantern show that brought the magic and grandeur of traditional Zigong lantern festivals to a major North American city. The centerpiece was a 50-meter winding dragon lantern that snaked through the festival grounds, accompanied by palace lantern arches, traditional red lantern corridors, zodiac animal sculptures, and cultural performance stages. The show celebrated Chinese New Year traditions while creating an inclusive, family-friendly experience that resonated with visitors from all cultural backgrounds.
Producing an authentic Chinese lantern show in North America required navigating cross-cultural design considerations, international logistics, and North American safety standards. The festival grounds were a public park with strict regulations about ground disturbance, noise levels, and crowd management. Shipping 40+ large lantern sculptures from China required careful planning for ocean freight, customs clearance, and on-site assembly within a tight 10-day installation window.
The festival was laid out as a cultural journey through Chinese New Year traditions. Visitors entered through a grand palace lantern arch adorned with golden dragons and phoenixes. The main pathway was lined with 200 traditional red lanterns, each hand-painted with auspicious patterns. The 50-meter golden dragon served as the visual anchor, with animated head movements and synchronized lighting. Surrounding zones featured the twelve zodiac animals, a lantern tunnel of changing colors, a cultural performance stage for lion dances and Hanfu shows, and a food market offering traditional Chinese New Year delicacies. Every element was designed to educate as well as entertain, with informational plaques explaining the cultural significance of each display.

All lanterns were handcrafted at our Zigong factory over a 10-week production period, with weekly photo updates shared with the client. The sculptures were shipped in three 40-foot containers, arriving two weeks before the scheduled opening. Our installation team of 22 technicians completed assembly in 10 days, working in two shifts to meet the deadline. Every structure was engineered to withstand local wind speeds of up to 90 km/h, with reinforced foundations and guy wire systems. The electrical system was inspected and certified by a local electrician, meeting all North American safety codes.
The four-week show attracted over 300,000 visitors, exceeding the client projections by 50%. Opening weekend alone drew 45,000 people, with lines extending for blocks. The event generated over $2.8 million in ticket revenue, plus additional income from food, merchandise, and sponsorships. Local media coverage was overwhelmingly positive, with the show featured on all major television networks and newspapers. Visitor satisfaction reached 94%, with many families making it an annual tradition. The city has since signed a three-year agreement to host the show annually, with our team creating new themes and lantern designs each year.
